World-Herald misses the big picture on Phelps-Roper
If you check out The Omaha World-Herald's article on Shirley Phelps-Roper, which details how Phelps-Roper is appealing a decision that convicted her of desecrating the American flag in Nebraska, you’ll see that it’s a well-written, unbiased story. But the picture the newspaper paired it with shows Phelps-Roper like a cult member—with the wild, glazed-over eyes of a loon.
What the World-Herald didn't do, however, was say just how far on the fringe this group is.
I decided to YouTube Phelps-Roper to better illustration how off the wall they might be, and came up with this:
I’m usually an unabashed first-amendment absolutist. The marketplace of ideas needs opinions of every sort, no matter the message. But even this causes me pause.
