Waterloo hostage scene ends peacefully
A man in Waterloo, Neb. surrendered to police after he held his former mother-in-law hostage inside a house. Police went to the house on a domestic disturbance call, but weren't able to contact anyone inside, reported the Omaha World-Herald.
When police entered the home, the man threatened to harm the woman if the police didn't leave.

Several area police agencies were called in to help, including the Nebraska State Patrol hostage negotiators and Omaha police.

Donahue told the Omaha World-Herald the woman escaped out of a second story window when the man left her alone to search for a handgun. After several hours of negotiating, the man surrendered to police. He was taken to a hospital then arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment, making terroristic threats, violating a protection order and felony property destruction.

Waterloo Police Chief Tim Donahue said the man had taken methamphetamine.

Arrest made in King Kong shooting
Marlon Pearson, 24, was arrested for the August 7 shooting of a man in a King Kong parking lot. The 39-year-old victim said he was at Cheaters bar when the man confronted him. He said he was followed to the King Kong restaurant at 44th and Dodge where he was shot.

Corn lobby
More than 5,000 farmers sent postcards to the Environmental Protection Agency voicing support for a measure that would allow gas stations to sell 15 percent corn ethanol fuel, according the Nebraska Corn Board. Most midlands gas stations sell a fuel blend that contains 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline.

Creighton student short of 'Millionaire'
A 19-year-old Creighton University student won $25,000 from the game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Rob Placek's winnings would just about cover the cost of one years tuition at Creighton for a full-time student without financial aid. Placek taped the show July 30 in New York City, but had to keep quite on the outcome until it aired.
